The Southern Football League is divided into three divisions, (Premier Division, Division One South & West and Division One Central) featuring both semi-professional and amateur football clubs. Together with six other divisions from the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League they help form levels seven and eight of the football league system. (Step 3 and 4 of the National League System)


There are currently are 66 teams in the Southern league, made up of clubs based in South Central, South West and the Midlands of England and South Wales. After a sponsorship deal with Evo-Stik the league has become known as the Evo-Stik League Southern, since 1 July 2011.


The Premier Division is a feeder division for the Conference South. However, promoted teams have also gone into the Football Conference North. Feeding the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division are the two leagues regional football divisions, Division One Central and Division One South & West. These two divisions are fed by various regional leagues at step 5 of the National League System (level 9 of the English football league system).
